Mooncry

on Sun May 13, 2018 1:18 am
Ruftan ran away from his abusive owner and stumbled across FlamePack, a Pack of wild dogs that live in the forest. He is taken into the Pack and is allowed to train with them and learn their ways. However, when dogs start to go missing, only to appear days later dead, the young pup makes it his mission to find the murderer and save his adoptive Pack.

Ranks:
Highest Rank

Alpha: The leader of the pack; can have a maximum of two alphas if the current alpha has a mate. Like any other leader the alpha will keep everything in order and occassionally lead hunting patrols or regular territory patrols, although at rare times they will lead scouting parties if they have received reports of strange activity within their territory if the corporal is absent or one hasn't been appointed yet by the lieutenant or general.

Mid-ranks

Sub-rank: Military

General: The leader of the dogs in the military sub-rank, they are in charge of picking and choosing which dogs will be the essential and main protectors of the pack. Amongst the military rank their word is law, and whichever orders they give must be obeyed; any insubordinance from those below a general will lead to a suspension and temporary demotion to either the second lowest rank in the military sub-rank or the lowest rank in the pack depending on the offence. If the offending canine continues, the general will be forced to forced to demote them permanently or their actions will lead to exile from the pack.

Lieutenant: The second in command in the military sub-rank, they will often assist with the picking of their soldiers or will asisst in giving orders, though whatever orders they choose to give out must be cleared with the general first. If the general is absent, the lieutenant will temporarily take over until the general returns; if something should happen to the general the lieutenant will take his or her place. Typically they are the ones to lead territory patrols.

Head-Corporal and corporals: The head-corporal is typically the third in command, and are in charge of any other corporal currently present in the military sub-rank. They are in charge of training new recruits and leading scouting parties which are sent out when suspicious activity takes place within the pack's territory. If the lieutenant is absent the head-corporal will temporarily take his or her place, if something should happen to the lieutenant the head-corporal will move into that position and appoint a new head-corporal.

Corporals are generally senior soldiers who have proved themselves worthy to move up in the sub-rank.

Soldiers: the second lowest rank in the military sub-rank, they are to obey orders and participate in patrols and scouting parties. They are expected to be tough, strong, hardy, and are required to have a lot of endurance.

Conscripts: the lowest rank in the military sub-rank, these are new recruits that the general picked to be in the sub-rank. They are to be trained to become soldiers, and are expected to occassionally run errands for the higher ranks in the military sub-rank.

Normal Mid-ranks

Hunters: The canines with the best agility and can move rather swiftly are generally made hunters by the alpha, there is no particular organized system amongst the hunters but any senior hunters will train new hunters or even sometimes pick pups to become hunters if the alpha is currently busy.

Shaman: The healer of the pack, the shaman will take care of any sick or injured dogs, they will also take on the roll of a messenger if the alpha needs to inform another pack about something. To kill or harm the shaman of another pack means a declaration of immediate war on said pack.

The shaman will pick and choose from the pups which he would like to train to take his place.

Informants: Canines who are the spies of the pack, they are sent out to temporarily take on a new identity and join a rival pack to gather information and report back to the alpha or the general. Usually picked by the alpha, but senior informants will also pick which pups they wish to train to be an informant.

Pupils: pups who are old enough to be trained as hunters, as a shaman, or as informants.

Lowest-ranks:

Guardians: the babysitters of the pack, usually older females and males who are retired but some younger males and females can be appointed as guardians if they choose to retire early or have been demoted from the military sub-rank due to a serious offence. They will watch over the pups when any of the queens chooses to join the hunters temporarily.

Pups: any pups that are too young to be pupils or conscripts.

Queens: Any female canine who is about to give birth or has given birth and is currently nursing their pups. If their pups are old enough to be without her for a short time but not old enough to be a pupil or conscript she will be able to take part in hunting, if she chooses to hunt one of the guardians will take over to watch over the pups and make sure they are safe and stay out of trouble.

An image forms out the blackness, it's all too familiar, yet also too unwelcome.

"This is the one you were talking about?" a rather large man speaks, looking down at a young large pup on a leash; in his prime but perhaps too young to begin fights right away after he's finished his training, he's not an adult yet but there's something about his stature that makes him appear like he could handle himself anyway. Flicking a cigarette butt on the ground the man raises his gaze to the man keeping control of the frightened animal.

"Yeah, kind of scrawny...got him from some guy who bought it from a junkie. I don't know the whole story behind it, but at least I didn't pay much for the fucker." The second man yanked on the leash causing the canine to choke a little as his frightened expression becomes more intense.

He wasn't sure why he was here, but he missed the comfort of his former person's company; his surroundings here were cold and harsh compared to his memories of everything that came before, even the cage he was shoved in before he arrived felt more like home. Tail tucked between his legs he once again allowed himself to be led to another place as the conversation between the two suspicious characters continued but died off. An image of a sweet smiling face comes to mind, a face he wishes he could see in front of him right now, but the bittersweet emotion it brings seems to be more ideal than the growing feeling of dread. He's struck with pain, and everything goes black again.

Jerking awake Apollo's head snaps up as his mind recalls the memory of his arrival at the dogfighting place in the form of a dream, it was a change from the usual dreams of the young boy who lingers in them--usually being the main character--but it wasn't shocking that he also dreamed of that horrible place as well. For a while, it was the only thing going on in his life and despite his hatred for it, he had no choice but to go on. Things were better now, but it didn't change anything that had happened.

He no longer wanted to dwell on the past, at least for now, he couldn't allow that to interfere with him going on with a new day. With a quiet whine, the German Shepherd stood up, stretching to loosen up his stiff joints; when he feels ready he begins to make his way out of his den, only to be greeted by a familiar elder canine, a rottweiler to be exact, sitting obediently and patiently at the entrance seemingly waiting for the younger dog.

"Good morning Brutus, is there any particular reason why you're here?"

Brutus tilted his head to the side, "not really sir, I heard you rustling around so I wanted to make sure everything is alright," he bowed his head to the ground, nudging a large hare toward his leader with his grayed muzzle, "I figured I'd bring you some breakfast too."

"You don't need to do that," Apollo growled, his fur bristling slightly at the gesture. He didn't much appreciate how the older dog had always taken pity on him but regardless he accepted the food offered to him. Not bothering to wait for thanks--though it would have never come from him--Brutus stood back up and turned away, intending on going back to perhaps finish organizing a regular patrol for the day.

Ricto was wrestling Akela in the clearing. Their high-pitched yelps and barks were enough to wake nearly every dog in camp that wasn't already up and about. Not too far off, Rascal was watching the pups play-fight, seeming to encourage them. Dash was at the fresh-kill pile, picking out what prey was leftover from the day before. She knew what it wouldn't be long before dogs were sent out to refill their food pile. Max was lazying about in the early morning sun, keeping an eye on the young dogs and pups as they went about their day. Jagger was appearing out of the den along with Berus at his heels. Pacha was also appearing from her den with Miika limping behind her. The Shaman told her she could return to her normal duties so long as she took it easy with her back leg. Miika dipped her head in farewell as she made her way over to Brutus, having spotted him from across the clearing. Ruftan was staying by the nursery, watching the other pups play.

"Good morning, Brutus," Miika greeted the older dog, dropping her head in respect. "How are you? Is there anything you'd like done?"

The large canine stopped as Miika approached him, he tilted his head in confusion at her question. Why was she asking him that? He wasn't in command of the hunters, not to mention she was still injured which he figured would make it difficult for her to do much of anything. Thinking of how exactly he should respond to that, Brutus sat down and scratched his ear quickly.

"Good morning to you too, why are you asking me for orders?" He finally asked after a short pause.

Miika sat down as she carefully watched her injured paw. She knew that he wasn't in charge of the hunting party, but she didn't think there was much hunting she could do at the moment with her still hurt leg. Hunting fast prey like rabbit or squirrel would be next to impossible for her in her current state. Plus, Pacha had told her to take it easy. Pelting after fast animals would be anything but. Not to mention, the smaller dog wouldn't let her hear the end of it.

The brown-and-white she-dog paused for a moment. "I know you're not in charge of the hunters. I can't exactly hunt all too well right now with my injury. Pacha said to take things easy for awhile still so..." She didn't want to sound like she was complaining or whining about being hurt. She also didn't want to be seen as some dog that needed to be taken care of. She had been cooped up in the Shaman den for a few days, and she was itching to do something, even if it was something small. "I wanted to know if you needed help with anything. Or if anything needed to be done around camp."

His head remained tilted and the same confused expression didn't seem to fade; it was no secret that he didn't really understand even with her explanation. He wasn't the Alpha, perhaps one day he could be, but it wasn't within his duties to decide what the other dogs should do he was only ever in charge of his troops and that was it.

"Err...Miika, don't you think you should be asking Apollo what you should be doing in that case? Or perhaps you could look into watching after some of the pups, but I don't have anything for you to do."

Brutus didn't really enjoy being so dismissive like that but he couldn't think of any other way to respond to her, he wasn't used to some of the other pack members coming up to him and looking for work, in fact, he couldn't recall a time where that has happened before. Wanting to remove himself from the awkward situation the two of them had created, the Rottweiler got up and began walking away.

Miika shifted wordlessly on her legs. Honestly, a lot of dogs viewed Brutus as some sort of Beta figure, despite the fact that he was the general in a different set of canines. The Pack really didn't have a beta since as far as she could recall, Apollo never picked a dog to be one. Being a general was the next best thing to that, so the she-dog felt it was only logical to go to him for any duties that might need to be done. He was used to given dogs orders in the military rankings of the Pack, wasn't he? She didn't think this was any different. Then again, she was only a hunter. What did she really know about the higher rankings? As she watched him go, she felt a bit embarrassed about the whole thing, but she decided to push that aside for the time being as she limped towards where Apollo was. She had hoped that she hadn't made things any worse between herself and Brutus the next time they spoke to each other.
